BOARD AND CARES ARE CRITICAL TO THE HOUSING CONTINUUM

I am interested in the Governor’s $250 million for Assisted Residential Facilities (ARFs) commonly known as Board and Cares. Orange County is an @8% fair share based on population, or roughly $20 million.  Board and Cares currently get reimbursed $35 per day; pre-covid, Governor Newsom recognized the model is broken. When closed, there is a loss of beds and a site free of the NIMBYs. Site control is critical. Orange County.  Orange County Housing and Supportive Services provide a continuum of housing resources for individuals living with serious mental illness who are experiencing homelessness.

This is a necessary link in the housing continuum; John Sherin, Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH) has been speaking out locally and at hearings in Sacramento. He understands that Los Angeles has maybe half of what is needed; he has a voice for the most vulnerable. Surprisingly, California Behavioral Health Director’s Association (CBHDA) representing local Behavioral Health Directors have been less vocal.
